Do not be afraid to look into the darkness

«Do not be afraid to look into the darkness» is a video that was directed by Anna Matskova for Russian psychofolk artist EAVA.
Video attempts to narrate a story about the dramatic effects of existential suffering and mortality. We emerge out of darkness, we fade into darkness- life seems to exist through death and what surrounds us is an open, vast space.

«Maybe one day we’ll cross this ocean» – A metaphor for existence in general.

We chose the setting of an endless, dark, but beautiful ocean, where the audience is presented with one of two protagonists, namely, a relatable yet unidentifiable man, sailing alone on the open water.

The second protagonist dances on a pole, representing her struggle to endure life on earth. This scene depicts her weapon of choice; this is how she transforms darkness into passion. She redirects the audience’s attention to the image of a doll in a box, a representation of her life being akin to a dance inside of her own world.

Both images are analogous to one another. The person on the boat and the dancing girl are doing the same thing; trying to «cross this ocean».

According to the situation that is now happening in Russia, we can relate the song to inability of some people to look into the darkness, but on the contrary avoiding realising and facing the truth. We can cross the ocean only if we aren’t afraid of a darkness the ocean contains.
