Estonian artist Toomas Altnurme at Hacienda Caracha, Mexico

The warm welcome extended by the hotel owner, Sir Hugo Alfaro Lemus, and the event curator, Victor Rodrigues Morfin, created a delightful experience. Bonds were forged with fellow Mexican artists and musicians, enriching the overall artistic camaraderie. Hacienda Caracha, once a sugar cane factory in the late 1800s, underwent transformation into a tourist center, showcasing 35 rooms, a restaurant, bar, water park, expansive green areas, and orchards.

Art embellishes every corner, creating an immersive experience. Caracha, meaning ‚a place where artists gather,‘ invites you to explore its unique offerings. The festival coincided with one of Mexico’s most significant art and culture events, the Day of the Dead. This vibrant celebration, spanning from October 31st to November 2nd, beautifully combines indigenous Aztec beliefs with Catholicism, symbolizing the enduring connection between the living and the deceased.

Originating from pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations, especially the Aztecs, the Day of the Dead faced suppression during the Spanish conquest. However, the fusion of indigenous and Catholic beliefs gave rise to the modern celebration, featuring altars adorned with marigold flowers, candles, incense, papel picado, and photographs of departed loved ones. Symbolic calaveras (skulls) permeate the festival, with people painting their faces or wearing skeleton costumes. Sugar skulls, intricately decorated and inscribed with names, are popular treats. La Catrina, an iconic figure, symbolizes the universality of death and was popularized by artist José Guadalupe Posada.

Marigold flowers and copal incense are used to attract the souls of the deceased, while families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, celebrating the lives of their loved ones. Food offerings, including pan de muerto and tamales, play a crucial role in the festivities. The Day of the Dead is not just a spiritual occasion; it’s a vibrant artistic and cultural expression. Artisans craft intricate papel picado, masks, and figurines, depicting skeletons engaged in various activities. While deeply rooted in tradition, the celebration continues to evolve, with parades, exhibitions, and theatrical performances adding contemporary flair. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Day of the Dead holds global significance, showcasing the enduring beauty of Mexican culture.

Haus Gallery Tallinn about VISIONARY ABSTRACTION

Visionary abstractions! Abstractionism in art has taken on a wide variety of forms over time, and today we no longer doubt its existence; rather, we polemicize what speaks more or less to us in abstractionism, what colors and textures touch us, or what kind of abstractionism our consciousness/subconscious can or cannot grasp. We are equally touched by the painting and sculpture of Thomas Altnurme, in which we look for the idiosyncratic intrigue and differences of today’s art expression.

The emergence of abstractionism in art actually began somewhat as early as the second half of the 19th century, when the Impressionists began to abbreviate the technical techniques of realistic painting typical of the era – brushing the contours of the world, distancing themselves from the historical theme of heroism, and engaged more in depicting the closest context of life, such as parks, streets and ordinary people. The Cubists, in turn, made this world angularly fragmentary; the reality of the fauvist compositions was built up by the color that dominated everything, etc., up to the abstract expressionists, in whose paintings the whole imaginary was transformed more into its emotional and spontaneously created essence, showing the viewer only the movements and rhythms of colors…

„Vision“ – 2017, Acryl, Leinwand. 60 x 90 cm (ungerahmt), Preis ca. 3.600€ (c)T.Altnurme

Who is Toomas Altnurme in this still enduring play of abstraction, to which his colourful paintings and sculptures in the exhibition hall of haus gallery try to answer.

What makes any modern abstractionist interesting is his individuality, his ability to intrigue the viewer. Altnurme intrigues with the mobility of colors and compositions, also in sculptures with constructivist playfulness. The artist uses industrial and urban metal elements by combining them into a new object and coating them with neon paints.

Altnurme’s paintings, however, are perhaps the colours themselves, emphatically and directly – the colours blend and flow into each other. As if the surface of the canvas were water, which in its natural motion could mix and shape these colors in its own way, giving the impression that the colors could still change their places and outlines at the finished work. At times, the colours accumulate on the surfaces of Altnurme’s paintings in such abundantly thick layers that they create illusions of landscape forms.

Visionary abstractions – this is how Altnurme’s individual works or lines of paintings drawn in series act. Moving from one image to another and back, the viewer may be struck by a certain visionary hallucination that the colors create with their sometimes wild but self-evident games.

Toomas Altnurme can be considered a multimedia artist who has worked in the fields of painting, installation, sculpture, photography, mixed equipment and digital art. Altnurme has an exotic art education and career. He studied art for 7 years in Asia, rajamangala university in Thailand and Seoul National University in Kyonghee, South Korea, and completed his master’s degree from Hongik UniversitySouli. Since 2014, Altnurme has been working as a lecturer in fine arts at the University of the United Arab Emirates.

Toomas Altnurme is an internationally active artist who has participated in nearly the 50th Sculpture Symposium and whose paintings and sculptures are found in different parts of the world, including monumental forms – the US state of South Carolina, Canada Quebec, Carretas of Chile, Brazil Brusque, Costa Rica Cauhita, Taiwan Shimen, Japan ShinJuku, Thailand Bangkok, Indonesia Bali, Singapore, South Korea Seoul, Danish Hojer, France Saint Henry, etc. In Estonia, his works can be found in the Art Museum of Estonia in Tallinn and Tartu, as well as in the urban spaces of Pärnu, Paide and Tallinn. Toomas Altnurme is a member of the Estonian Painters‘ Union. – This is how Piia Ausman, the curator of the current exhibition – announced the international artist in advance.

Toomas Altnurme and the „Beauty of the Desert“ The art month in Abu Dhabi – a springboard to the world
Weiterlesen

Toomas Altnurme and the „Beauty of the Desert“

The art month in Abu Dhabi – a springboard to the world for Estonian artists! Seven Estonian artists who were selected in a competitive tender traveled to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and lived a month in creative residency at Al Khateem Art Hub in the middle of a desert oasis. During this period, they immersed themselves in the local culture, went on solitary retreats into the desert, and devoted themselves to their art.

For the first time, the Art Month program also featured music, with the creation of an inspiring ensemble that mutually motivated all participants. Singer and songwriter Emma Johanna Lepasoo made a valuable contribution, filling the desert silence with magical sounds. The mastermind of the idea, Toomas Altnurme, proposed expanding the format of the Art Month in the future to involve creative people from other fields as well.

The peak of the Estonian Art Month was the opening of the exhibition in Abu Dhabi, which was attended by several well-known local entrepreneurs as well as officials from the Ministry of Culture. Krista Reinhold represented the Estonian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Visitors to the exhibition were able to perceive how different artists experienced the desert on canvas in their own unique way. What was exciting was the way that the paintings reflected the physical influence of the creative residence. While some artists had a more open creative process, for others it was more reserved.

Desert-like

The distinctive creations of Kerttu Siplane, who has a background in fashion art, conveyed an excellent understanding of the local landscape. In her unique way, she herself prepared a color palette from local natural rocks and formed them into assembly-like compositions. Kerttu created her art in the most public and Arabic-style space of the creative residency. It was wonderful to see how she endlessly experimented with the material, her ability to focus, and her openness to dialogue with both the surrounding spaces and the people on site.

Hannes Võrno, who also has a degree in fashion, surprised everyone with tender art in pastels. His four monochromatic pieces of art form an ensemble that symbolizes the human life cycle. The works of Hannes are minimalistic but tense. They breathe and pause – and at the same time are charged with movement. The paintings of both Kerttu Siplane and Hannes Võrno could be perceived as meditations among more forceful and colorful works of art.

Borderline play of colors

Einar Vene’s fascinating naive paintings touch the boundaries of mysticism and metaphysics. The artist uses a variety of symbols that he invites the viewer to unlock as a trigger to their imagination. As the habits and traditions of the local cultural space also apply to the visual arts, Einar’s works play between what is permitted and what is forbidden. Bold bright colors and exciting hidden clues on religious topics added a playful dimension to the entire exhibition.

Sound of paintings

At the opening of the exhibition, Emma Johanna Lepasoo gave a heartwarming musical performance. The singer was dressed in a local Arabic-style shiny turquoise costume, with blue guitar and chair. All this interacted with the colorful paintings of Einar Vene and offered the viewer an exciting visual dialog. Emma started the concert with an a capella spiritual folk song, „My Heart Wake Up“. She then performed her own songs „The Sun Rises“, „Field Flowers Are My Song“ and the English-language song „Arabian Nights“. Written especially for the opening of the exhibition, inspired by both personal travel impressions and the works of the resident artists.

Emma arrived at the opening of the exhibition in Abu Dhabi directly from her creative residence in Liwa, 300 km away, where she had been filming a music video for her song „Sea of Memories“. This place is the last oasis in the United Arab Emirates before the beginning of one of the largest deserts in the world – Ar-Rub ‚al-Khali (The Empty Quarter).

Explaining her choice to film a video for this song, the singer said: „When I walked in the desert between sand dunes, I sometimes felt as if I was at the bottom of the sea. Except that there was no sea, of course. This atmosphere provided an ideal visual support to the sound language. The music video will be produced in collaboration with a local film production.”

Desert contrasts

It was interesting to see the change in the process – although Einar Vene painted his works in the same semi-open studio-type room as Raivo Kelomees, their works were displayed in different parts of the room. Raivo Kelomehe’s two paintings stood out from the rest of the exhibition. Since he was the last to join Art Month, the local environment had not influenced his paintings as much as those of other artists. Instead, his paintings follow a clearly surreal line and reflect unique inland landscapes. The lines on the canvas intertwine into complex knots that have neither a beginning nor an end. Raivo was one of the two artists who had also participated in the first Art Month back in 2016.

Katrin Karu

Katrin Karu, an artist whose stellar rise started after the first Art Month in the Emirates, also secured a spot in this year’s list of participating artists. Karu attracted attention not only with her large-scale, bold, and contrasting paintings but also with the silk dress she was wearing at the exhibition opening. When she stood in front of her works in a dress designed to match her paintings, the audience had the impression that the artists had just stepped out of her painting.

This combination formed an exciting symbiosis at the opening of the exhibition. Katrin’s creative process was also fascinating: she was the only one who painted outside the area of the creative residency, supporting the canvas against a high gray wall against the backdrop of the broad desert. The location of her outdoor studio was certainly reflected in the paintings. They were also presented differently at the exhibition – these paintings did not hang on the walls but were placed like protective screens in pairs against each other above the floor on either side of the main entrance of the gallery.

Toomas Kuusing

Toomas Kuusing, who in his paintings uses bright and clear colors that resemble the desert sand and sun, offered exciting desert etudes. He also worked in an outdoor studio, albeit in a shady place, overlooking sand dunes. Due to his straightforward technique, the objects depicted in the paintings created a unique graphic composition. This visual combination had a fresh effect on the viewer. It was also interesting to see how his paintings resonated with Einar Vene’s works, amplifying them and in turn being amplified by them when displayed side by side.

Toomas Altnurme

While the artists were putting the final brushstrokes to their works in the desert heat, Toomas Altnurme, a legend in his own right, arrived at the creative residency on a motorcycle, threw canvases on the sand and began to paint with passion. Unlike the other Estonians, he had to skillfully balance between several different roles: artist, sculptor, curator, public relations officer, and host – all this while also giving lectures. This multi-layered state is also reflected in the works he displayed at the exhibition – he uses mixed techniques in his paintings. A pastel base layer, which resembles desert views, is covered with distinct dreamlike moods inspired by the Arabic script, drawn with a finer brush.

One of the paintings depicts a mystical genie, personified in the slightly spooky local legends that the owner of Al Khateem’s creative residency shared by the fireside. Altnurme’s works exude the exciting harmony of the artists’ personal style and his extensive knowledge of local culture.

Interview: Toomas Altnurme about ART Symposium 2021 in Paris

You can find our last interview with the experienced artist Toomas Altnurme here: Interview with artist, curator, and art director Toomas Altnurme. His sculpture „Peace“ was named „Work of the Week“ by us – more about it: Werk der Woche #17 – PEACE. Now he’s flying to Paris in a few hours, so there wasn’t much time for our questions, so we are all the more pleased, that he took the time for a short status update.

Interview – Toomas Altnurme

The 6th international ART Symposium in Paris, what can laypeople imagine under the event?

There will be an international art symposium, mostly painting and the plan is to form a new art museum.

will visitors be possible on-site? Or will the event be broadcast online?

Yes, I think visitors can visit but let’s talk when I am there. I’m not sure about the regulations, maybe let’s do a live broadcast from the studio. I’ll be there from October 14th to 23rd.

Can you already reveal what kind of motif or program you have come up with?

Paris always has been a big inspiration especially because of their love for art for centuries, now I can only imagine what I will create there, and let’s see what new inspiration brings. I am going outdoors with an easel and canvases and will paint like old-school impressionists. In different places parks or even cemeteries. So it will be a spontaneous choice. There will be also a studio fo indoors for artists to use…

That sounds exciting, but at the same time do you also have an exhibition in Estonia?

Yes, Estonia Paide Culture center I will exhibit my new computer-generated works. 3D sculptures and others printed on synthetic canvases are also 3D prints. The works are just about ready and will be transported tomorrow to the gallery.

A total of 7 works are shown in Estonia, very large works with approx. 220×120 or even 220x150cm. How long will the works be on view?

The exact date and the place where the works of art will be installed will be communicated shortly.

Let’s get back to Paris. What will your daily routine in Paris look like? Painting, painting, painting or some free time too?

Painting, making friends and go to all the museums again. Explore the city from a different point of view, make photos and videos too

How many artists will there be in total at the event in Paris?

I hear it will be 100 artists. But let’s see how many actually will make it there, the event has been postponed 2 times. I will send you photos right away and also we can make a video call, I am sure there is wifi somewhere…

Our readers would certainly be happy. Do you already have plans for next year?

The plan is to create lots of art. November month 2021 I organize Estonian Art month in UAE and 7 artists will participate in UAE artist residency.

Also, I would like to organize an artist residency in Hiiumaa island Estonia if possible. Then also sculpture symposium and Biennale. All the events have been postponed for 2 years now just like the Paris art symposium was postponed 2 times and now finally hopefully happening.

Are you lucky enough to be financially secure through your art despite Corona, or is it currently a negative business?

Art is always ART FOR ART and business is secondary. I create art because it comes from inside me and gives me fulfillment and I feel this is what I am supposed to do under the Sun. If I would be very much interested in business I would work in another sector like commercial design, architecture, real estate, or even sailing or farming. But never say never can be I will go to art business full time as well like art auctions. Art is the best business anyway. I have a special respect for nature and the problems we have now are urban man problems alienated from nature. All this pandemia has been like a forced inner view to meet yourself in isolation, so it’s up to the person how you can be alone and survive, for artists, it means more time for art, of course, many events have been canceled so have to work via online and learn new ways out of comfort zone. I started to research something new for me at that time.

New research objective

Creating art for 3D printing, laser cuts, welding them into original unique contemporary monumental sculptures:

For artists creating unique artworks is his lifelong research. I have done sculptures last 30 years from various materials and this research would help to develop new works using 3D programs and the latest laser technology to create artforms in diverse sizes and techniques. The artworks which are broadened in different mediums may create a language that will change reality to a better and more peaceful place.

Understanding and Developing Intellectual Property Value to Non-Fungible Tokens:

I started my artist career 30 years ago in 1991 when I made my first solo exhibition of oil paintings. At that time was not common to use computers or even mobile phones.

Since then, technology has developed rapidly and the world around us is changing amazingly fast, especially in times of pandemics when most of the work transferred its activities and studies to online. Everyone knows that art has value but there is a new digital player in the game next to Cyber Cryptocurrency and Artificial Intelligence and it demands its attention and is called NFT Non-Fungible Tokens.

As an artist, I started to create also digital artwork at the end of the 90ies, exactly in 1997 when I got my first Mac computer and studied Photoshop program in South Korea Seoul Hongik University did my Masters of Fine Art. Digital art was an early use case for NFTs, because of the ability of blockchain technology to assure the unique signature and ownership of NFTs. This research would focus on how to develop intellectual property, intangible or tangible to become NFTs and what are the best platforms for that.

NFTs?

Non-Fungible Tokens, known as NFTs, recently made headlines with sales of individual tokens valued at millions of dollars, comparable to sales of fine art. Christie’s– a “conventional” auction house – sold its first NFT, the piece “Everyday’s: The First 5,000 Days” by the artist Beeple – for a staggering $69 million. Most NFTs sell from merchants without such established reputations. Traders should understand the value of the intellectual property, or lack thereof, tied to NFTs.

Interview with the artist, curator and art director: Toomas Altnurme

The Estonian artist Toomas Altnurme was born in 1973, he lives and works in the United Arab Emirates. We contacted him for an interview to find out what he’s working on, and to ask a few questions about art and we’re trying to figure out how to find a good gallery. He also tells us what to expect in the future and gives young artists a tip on the way.

An easy start, where are you right now, how are you and what project are you currently working on?

Now I am working on kinetical metal sculptures made from recycled industrial metal, good for the environment but not only that it’s a good game as an artist to compose objects into compositions.

You studied painting at the Rajamangala University of Technology. You studied sculpture at Seoul University and obtained your Master of Fine Arts from Hongik University in Seoul. Is studying important for artists?

My studies have always been interest-based, so I never did think about success or money, but somehow with hard work never giving up on art, I did reach that point that my art, sculptures are all around the world Europe, Asia, America, Africa. I am 3 generation artist and did grow up seeing many arts from my father and grandfather so I somehow keep up the family traditions since they are not around anymore. I have been an international artist, sculptor, painter, designer, photographer for more than 25 years. I did study between 1991 to 2001 in 5 universities, I did study 1981 to 1997 at Tallinn University in Estonia and did graduate with a Baccalaureus Arctium degree in Art Education and Technical Drawing, that degree now is considered as master’s level qualification. 1994 to 1995 I did study with UNESCO Scholarship at Rajamangala University in Thailand. 1997 to 2001 I got a Korean Government scholarship and did a study in Kyunghee university Korean language, then sculpture research in Seoul National University and did graduate 2001 Hongik University Graduate School with a Master of Fine Art focusing on painting, digital art, and sculpture installation. My thesis name was My inner world expanded by various media techniques and culture. I speak several languages, Estonian, English, Finnish, Korean, and some Spanish and Arabic. I have been teaching Fine Art and Design for more than 15 years in universities in Estonia Tartu Art College, Estonian Art Academy, and last 7 years in United Arab Emirates University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. United Arab Emirates university I did teach Fine Art and Design to more than 2000 students already. Courses include Photography, Designing Media Messages, Drawing, Painting, 3D Design +sculpture, Art Criticism, Art History, Culture, and Heritage. I curated hundreds of Fine Art solo and group exhibitions, participated in international sculpture symposiums, and created art, designs, photos, and sculptures for public spaces, parks, museums in more than 50 countries. I did travel and make friends and photos around the world in 80 countries.

According to Wikipedia, you have been teaching visual arts and design at the University of the United Arab Emirates in Al Ain since 2014, how did you come to this decision?

I was invited here to an international sculpture symposium Upcircle, recycled materials were in Liwa UAE, the same time I saw there was an opening in UAEU for teaching Fine Art so I did apply. I got the job out of 90 applicants.

As a teacher, can you still find the time to devote yourself to your own art?

I work just 3 days a week so I have plenty of time for art, now that all is online it’s even more time for creations.

Your works of art can be found in public spaces in the USA, Brazil, Russia, Chile, Taiwan, Denmark. England, Italy, Germany, Finland, actually to be found in every country, what tip do you have for young artists?

For sculptors, there are symposiums all around the world, that way I got my sculptures into 50 countries, was lucky to doit before the pandemia, always there is competition, but more you apply better chance for you to get invitations so do not give up and believe in yourself is the key. Artists have to self-motivate just like every other person comes down to self-esteem, which needs training and discipline.

In Germany, a new gallery study has shown that 9 out of 10 galleries work with artists without written contracts. You have had exhibitions around the world, what are your experiences with them?

Galleries is not creating the intellectual content, but artists are so galleries percentage is usually too high. Institutions try to always put art to the box and label it, take power away from creators. I recommend finding alternative places for showing your work reaching out to people without a middleman who takes the % so be creative in that. The best exhibition I ever had was in the Noksapeyong subway station Seoul during 3 months 2 million people visited the exhibition.

How do you recognize a „good“ gallery?

Artists should never ever pay for gallery exhibitions they art, but it should be free, or artists get paid. In Estonia, there are 3 galleries that pay for an artist to show their work A BAD gallery is a corporate gallery in a style where artists cannot even apply to show their work, the standard answer is we have our curators, and they choose the artists. That is a scam what you can see in New York Scandinavia many museums, galleries that exhibit dead artist works and profit from there. A good gallery is open for all artists unfortunately we can’t see many of them those days so you can create your own.

Are exhibitions currently planned despite the global pandemic?

For outdoors, parks it’s not a problem also virtual exhibitions 3D solo virtual exhibition

What can we expect from you in the future?

Now and in the future, we will see lots of digital art sold with cryptocurrency so there is a way to go there

Not only are you an artist, if I’ve done the right research, but you’re also a curator and art director?

Yes, I was working 2013 in Berlin as Art Director in South Korean German Multimedia Corporation so I saw intellectual property sold with millions, artist undervalues they creations and should try to take the business side in their hands if possible. I made 300 exhibitions with my art around the world then I saw that I can also do it for other artists did organize exhibitions in Paris, South Korea, and UAE. I was invited to be Co-Curator to be in Italy Dolomites Biennale.

Which artist do you prophesy a glorious future?

Multi talents who can handle all the tasks by himself or herself, creating art, promoting, selling and so one

Is there an artist that you would deny talent to? Where they say it’s just hype and show, not „art“?

Art is a subjective matter and comes down if an artist has creativity or not, can play, compose, or not. Art is a lifelong study so will see in the end who is an artist and not. Short-term performances are like reading 1 page from the book and have to give the value. LIFE IS ART so there are no limits to creating new ways of seeing and understanding. The human brain has the capacity and can create an 11-dimensional reality there is a long way to go still.

Please keep me informed about future exhibitions and press releases. I would be happy to report on it and inform the German/European market about your events.

Thank you very much. The next exhibition should be in Paris from 1 to 6 June, of course, if there is no lockdown like now. December 1 to 5 2021 I am planning to organize Art Biennale in Abu Dhabi. At the end of November, 2021 will be an exhibition in EXPO Estonian Pavillion Dubai.
