Am 2. Juni startete die Ausstellung „SACRED RUBBINGS“ von Mario Cassar. Die Kunstwerke des maltesischen Künstlers werden bis zum 25. Juni im Ministerium der Insel Gozo / Malta gezeigt. Aber für wen? Denn Besucher sind ausdrücklich nicht „erlaubt“ – das Motto lautet: OUT OF BOUNDS.

Da ein Besuch für die Öffentlichkeit nicht möglich ist, freuen wir uns umso mehr exklusive Einblicke geben zu können. Wir sprachen auch mit dem Künstler über die Idee und das Konzept. Alle Fotos stammen von Maltas Top-Fotograf Daniel Cilia.

Steht Kunst nicht immer für sich allein?

Während die meisten Künstler wahrscheinlich traurig wären, wenn niemand zu ihrer Ausstellung kommt, macht Cassar genau das zu seinem Konzept. Cassar zeigt, dass Kunst für sich allein stehen kann. Out of Bounds ist eine Erweiterung der „SACRED RUBBINGS“ – Ausstellung, die „normal“ für das Publikum geöffnet war und bei der Premiere in Valletta Hunderte von Besuchern anzog.

Die Papierarbeiten, bei denen Cassar Grafit und rote Tinte verwendete, stießen sowohl in Malta als auch bereits im Ausland auf großes Interesse, es ist also nicht so, das die Arbeiten niemand sehen möchte. Der Aufwand für die Fertigstellung der Arbeiten war ein langer Prozess, eigentlich schade, wenn niemand diese Werke zu Gesicht bekommt. Was dachte sich der Künstler bei dem Projekt?

„OUT OF BOUNDS“ ist ein neues Konzept für SACRED RUBBINGS. Ich habe mich bewusst dafür entschieden, die Ausstellung zu halten, ohne das Publikum hereinzulassen. Kunst hat ein Eigenleben jenseits von Zeit und Raum. Viele Leute wollten die Show sehen, sie schickten mir einige frustrierte Nachrichten. Ich nutzte die Idee, um eine Diskussion über Kunst zu eröffnen und ich nahm einige dieser Gespräche mit Künstlern und Kunstexperten auf.“ – so Cassar.

„Wir sprachen unter andere über Fragmente und warum meine Arbeiten wie Karten bzw. architektonische Blaupausen mit Markierungen sind. Im Gespräch waren bereits der Künstler und Akademiker Vince Briffa, der Modedesigner Luke Azzopardi und der Autor und Akademiker John Baldacchino – weitere Dialoge werden folgen.“

Die eine oder andere offene Frage wird also bald beantwortet. Soweit und sobald es möglich ist, werden wir die Diskussionen auf Arttrado veröffentlichen. Zusätzlich haben wir Fragen zur Ausstellung an den Hon. Minister der Insel Gozo gestellt.

Von der Idee zur Ausstellung

Mario Cassar: „Die Idee kam mir bei einem Friedhofsbesuch und da fiel mir ein Grabstein ins Auge. Es war in einer Zeit, in der ich darüber nachdachte, einige Landinterventionen als Teil der Land Art durchzuführen. Ich kehrte den Ansatz um, anstatt selbst einzugreifen nahm ich Fragmente und Teile von Inschriften.“

Malta, Frankreich, Jerusalem, Palästina…

Es war ein langer Prozess, die Werke aus der Ausstellung zu erschaffen. Für „Sacred Rubbbings“ reiste Cassar jahrelang in verschiedene Teile der Welt. Cassar nahm Abschürfungen von Denkmälern und Denkmälern in Gozo/Malta, Paris, Jerusalem und verschiedenen palästinensischen Städten.

„Sacred Rubbings“ ist nicht nur in einem Atelier entstanden, wo vermutlich die meisten Künstler arbeiten. In „Sacred Rubbings“ steckt Arbeit, Energie, Geschichten und Leben.

Bis zum 25. Juni werden insgesamt 26 Arbeiten gezeigt. Dazu gehören großformatige Kunstwerke bis 150cm * 150cm – weitere Ausstellungen mit den Werken sind geplant. Galerien und Ausstellungshäuser, die an einer Zusammenarbeit mit Mario Cassar interessiert sind, können gerne unseren Kontakt nutzen.

Über die Insel Gozo

On June 2nd the exhibition „SACRED RUBBINGS“ by Mario Cassar started. The artworks of Mario Cassar will be shown in the Ministry of the island of Gozo / Malta until June 25th. But for whom? Because visitors are expressly not „allowed“ – the motto is: OUT OF BOUNDS.

We give exclusive insights and spoke to the artist about the idea and the concept. All photos are from Malta’s top photographer Daniel Cilia.

Doesn’t art for art sake stand on its own?

While most artists would probably be sad if no one comes to their exhibition, Cassar makes exactly that his concept. Cassar shows that art can stand on its own. Out of Bounds is an extension of the SACRED RUBBINGS exhibiton that was open to the public „normally“ and attracted hundreds of visitors at the premiere in Valletta.

The works on paper where Cassar used graphite and red ink generated a huge interest both in Malta and abroad, the effort for the completion of the works was a long process, actually a shame if nobody gets to see these works. What was Cassar thinking of the project?

„Out of Bounds: a new concept to Sacred Rubbings. I consciously opted to still hold the exhibition without letting the public in. Art has a life of its own, beyond time and space. Lots of people wanted to get to see the show, they sent me private messages frustrated. I used the idea to open a discussion about art, i m recording conversations with artists and art experts.

We spoke about fragments, how my works are like maps, architectural blueprints with markings.on them….names already include artist and academic Vince Briffa, fashion designer Luke Azzopardi, author and academic John Baldacchino and there are more to be recorded.“ -says Cassar

As far as possible we will publish the discussions on Arttrado, among other things we have put questions about the exhibition to the Hon. Minister of the island of Gozo.

From the idea to the exhibition

Mario Cassar: „I took the idea while visiting a cemetery and a gravestone struck my eye. It was a time when I was thinking about doing some land interventions as part of land art, however I reversed the approach. Instead of intervening/adding…I took fragments and parts of inscriptions.

Malta, France, Jerusalem, Palestine …

It was a long process of creating the works. For „Sacred Rubbings“, Cassar traveled for years in different parts of the world. Cassar took abrasions from monuments and memorials in Gozo / Malta, Paris, Jerusalem and various Palestinian cities.

„Sacred Rubbings“ wasn’t just created in a studio, as many artists work. There is work, energy, stories and life in „SacredRubbings“.

A total of 26 works will be shown until June 25th. This includes large-format works of art up to 150cm * 150cm – further exhibitions with the works are planned. Galleries and exhibition houses interested in working with Mario Cassar are welcome to use our contact.
